Felton West scholarship established

From Jorjanna Price via Fred King:

The Writers’ League of Texas has honored the late Felton West, a veteran newsman and long-time Austin resident, by issuing a scholarship in his memory.

The League’s Bess Whitehead Scott scholarship committee awarded a $1,000 journalism scholarship in West’s name to Tramese Darcell Andrews of Garland. Andrews, 20, is a journalism student at Baylor University.

West was an award-winning reporter and editor with The Houston Post. In five decades, he covered two U.S. presidents and seven Texas governors while serving as the Post’s bureau chief in Washington, D.C., and Austin.

West and wife Jean retired to Liberty Hill where he served a term on the city council. He was a charter member of the Bess Whitehead Scott scholarship committee, which is named for his high school English teacher. Scott helped him get his first job at the Post as a copy boy. He died last year at age 79.

Donations to the BWS Scholarship Fund are welcome. To make a donation in Felton West’s name, please include a note with that information. Gifts to the fund, administered by the non-profit Writers’ League of Texas, are tax-deductible. Make checks payable to “WRITERS’ LEAGUE OF TEXAS BWS FUND” and send to:
